MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

Hooray! New dates have just been posted for our calligraphy workshops. Our summer Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy classes will be held in three fabulous Washington, D.C. locations: The Loft at 600 F near the Verizon Center and at The Lemon Bowl, pictured above, a maker space in the Park View neighborhood of the city, as well as in the crazy cool Garage Room of the chic Embassy Row Hotel in Dupont Circle. We will also be returning to Falls Church, Virginia to teach at Stylish Patina’s Rough Luxe Warehouse, to Middleburg, Virginia to teach at the Middleburg Events Studio, to Charlottesville, Virginia to teach at rock paper scissors.

Now that we are well into our fifth year of teaching these classes, we continue to feel so thankful for the chance to share our love for calligraphy with our students and encouraged by the feedback we receive from them. A few of the kind notes we’ve received lately:

  • “I cannot thank you enough for such a wonderful class! You not only have the gift of phenomenal calligraphy; you are excellent at TEACHING it! I’ve been practicing nonstop since Saturday (and already ordered more supplies!).” – RL
  • “I am having so much fun practicing my writing, thanks so much for the quality teaching.” – SO
  • “Thanks again for a really fun class. I very much appreciated all of the hands on tips that you gave during the session.” – CG
  • “I wanted to compliment you on your teaching. It was so inspiring to watch you and your hand, and you definitely have the personality and the patience to be doing this. … I had such a great time and I cannot wait to practice.” – NI
  • “I SO enjoyed your class! It was so much fun!” – HD

There is nothing better seeing our students leave our workshops feeling excited to practice and grow as calligraphers!

If you’ve taken our Intro workshop previously: we’ve also posted new dates for our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, as well as for our more free-wheeling Calligraphy Study Tables.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this summer (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or graduation gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. We were absolutely thrilled to see one of our recent collaborations with Charlottesville, Va.-based stationery designers Rock Paper Scissors featured in the Spring 2016 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings’ Real Weddings and Honeymoons magazine! The invitation suite that Rock Paper Scissor’s Dani Antol designed for Kelsey and Casey’s destination wedding in Nassau, Bahamas was truly gorgeous and we were honored to have our Palmer lettering style incorporated into the invitation itself, as well as adorning the invitation envelopes and the seating cards. Seeing our collab in print was the icing on the cake!

We were completely over the moon when Martha Stewart Weddings asked us to contribute the calligraphy to illustrate one of the features in their Winter 2016 issue. The feature, called Tying The Knot, shares several ideas for incorporating knots into your Big Day, and our calligraphy (in our Richardson lettering style) is sprinkled through eight full pages, including on the boutonniere labels, the place cards, the “est. 2016” favor tags and, most prominently, on the oversized, crimson, knot-shaped escort cards. So exciting!

Take a peek at the entire feature below!

Late last year, I had the privilege of collaborating with our friend Christina at Paperzest to help create the paperie and other signage for a gorgeous styled shoot which is now featured in the Winter 2016 issue of Weddings Unveiled. The shoot, which was photographed by Elizabeth Fogarty Photography, styled by Cheers Darling Events and featured lush florals by Holly Heider Chapple, is an absolute must-see. For the paper and signage, we focused on copper, fig and hunter green, and Christina incorporated my Reese lettering style into all of the various pieces. I even brought to life her vision of having a seating chart lettered on a sheet of real copper! Totally divine!!

When the Winter/Spring 2016 issue of Washingtonian Bride & Groom magazine hit newsstands recently, we were so excited to see our calligraphy featured throughout the pages. Among the highlights:

• Two of the Real Weddings featured were those of our clients! When you pick up your copy, be sure to look for the chairs that we hand lettered in our McConnell lettering style for Stephen and Cara as well as the seating cards and menus featuring our Edwards lettering style for Katherine and Patrick’s wedding.

• We also had three of our escort cards plus one of our escort card displays appear in the magazine – in the “Spotlight on: Escort Cards” story, you can find our Reese lettering style on the “Farm to Table” card (a collaboration with Miss Merkle Design!) and our Palmer lettering style adorning a succulent pot. And then later in the issue, in the “50 Fun Ideas for Your Washington Wedding,” you can see our work in Number 5 (a personalized wine stopper) and Number 28 (the escort cards and banner we created for Danielle and Aaron’s wedding a couple of years ago).

• Finally, for the third year in a row, we were named a Top Vote Getter in the magazine’s annual list of Best Wedding Vendors. This is the best honor we can think of, because those voting are our colleagues and clients and their votes of encouragement in our work and the level of service we provide mean the world to us!

But again, this is an extremely limited time sale; once it’s over, we will not accept any additional orders this year!

Our calligraphy made its television debut today! The lovely Yodit Gebreyes of Favored by Yodit appeared on News Channel 8’s Good Morning Washington to share tips on dressing your table for Thanksgiving and we were lucky enough to collaborate with her on a bunch of pretty and creative ways to make this year’s celebration even more personalized and special than usual as you gather with friends and family.

Among the ideas Yodit included in her tablescape, all of which featured our Glade lettering style:

• Cards at each place setting that say “I am thankful for:” to encourage everyone to reflect on their blessings

• A large pumpkin centerpiece featuring hand-lettered sentiments of thankfulness plus hand-lettered mini pumpkins to adorn each place setting

• Buffet cards that help identify dishes for guests

• Wine glasses from West Elm, personalized with custom phrases written on each

• Personalized gift tags to go along with party favors

You can see all of Yodit’s ideas (and our calligraphy!!) by pressing “play” on the video above or pop over to Good Morning Washington’s website. Hooray!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

I cannot believe it is already November! Before this fall completely gets away from me, I wanted to share how absolutely thrilled I am to have three of my clients’ weddings featured in the Summer/Fall 2015 issue of Washingtonian Bride & Groom.

I had the privilege of working with Janice Carnevale from Bellwether Events and Claudia Smith from Fig. 2 Design on paper details for Alice and John’s May 2014 wedding at Rockwood Manor in Potomac, Maryland, as well as collaborating with Tabitha Roberts from Roberts & Co. Events to create custom hand-lettered wood tag escort cards for Jordan and Folasope’s September 2014 wedding at Potomac View Terrace in Washington, D.C. and collaborating with Rachel Merkle from Miss Merkle Design on everything from the custom invitations to a myriad of Day Of loveliness for Lee and Jonathan’s September 2014 wedding at Meridian House in Washington, D.C. I cannot overstate what an honor it is every time a client entrusts me with the paper (and chalkboard and mirror and window and wood and… I’ve written on just about everything at this point!) details for their celebrations. I take my work extremely seriously and try to give my very best with every project.

I am also ever thankful for the opportunities I have to work with so many amazing creative partners, both event designers and paper pros. To have some of those collaborations featured by Washingtonian Bride & Groom is the icing on the (wedding) cake! And to that end, I also want to say thank you to my fellow DC event professionals for making Meant To Be Calligraphy a “Top Vote Getter” in the magazine’s 2015 list of top wedding professionals. This is our second year receiving that designation and we could not be more honored to have that literal and figurative vote of confidence from our colleagues! Thank you!!
