Meant To Be Calligraphy

Meant To Be Calligraphy

Hooray! New dates have just been posted for our calligraphy workshops. Our summer Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy classes will be held in Washington, D.C. (at the industrial chic space that is The Loft at 600 F in the heart of the District) as well as in Middleburg, Virginia (in the center of this picturesque town at the beautiful Middleburg Events Studio) and also just outside of Baltimore, Maryland (at the gorgeous home goods shop Becket Hitch)!

Over the past few years, we’ve had students travel from as far away as Alaska and even Australia to take part in our workshops. And now, well into our fourth year teaching, we continue to be humbled and thrilled by the feedback we receive from our students. A very small sampling:

  • “I wanted to thank you for such a lovely day. Your class was exactly what I’d hoped it would be and I look forward to practicing and attending a workshop again soon. ” – LQ
  • “Thank you for such a wonderful and incredibly positive class. The time absolutely flew by. You are a wonderful teacher. I look forward to many hours of practice with hopeful improvement. ” – BR
  • “Thank you for a wonderful and inspiring morning!” – MB
  • “Thank you for such a fun and inspiring class! I can’t wait to practice – and practice some more – to be able to send some fun cards and letters to my family and friends back home” – KP

From our perspective, there is nothing better seeing our students leave our workshops feeling excited and encouraged to practice and grow as calligraphers!

Past students can can also find new dates in September for our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, which takes place at our home/studio, located just outside of the Del Ray area of Alexandria, Virginia. Those who have previously participated in one of our Intro workshops are also invited to take part in our signature, weeknight Calligraphy Study Table sessions, the next of which takes place in September as well, where we’ll endeavor to each create a signature lettering style.

So join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this summer (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary, graduation or Mother’s Day gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. You can find more details and register here.

The Real Thing For “The Real Thing”

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

I recently had the privilege of creating a bit of hand lettering (i.e. the real thing, not typography!) to be used as the title treatment for the cover of author Ellen McCarthy’s just-out, fabulous book, “The Real Thing.” Published by Random House, the book reflects on Ellen’s time on the Weddings beat for The Washington Post and offers lots of hard-won wisdom on finding love and helping it grow. It’s a must read for anyone who is either looking for love or wanting love to last. Working with Ellen and designer Victoria Allen at Random House to come up with just the right look for the title treatment was quite a thrill and I could not be more honored to have played a small part in Ellen’s huge achievement! The book was released last week – be sure to check it out!

My Hero

Daddy at his desk

Last week, my family and I said goodbye to my father. He had lived a long and wonderful life and he passed away peacefully, for which I will be ever thankful. But losing him was still very unexpected and I’m quite sure that my heart will never be the same. My dad was, without question, my hero.

The reason I wanted to take a moment to remember him here in this space, however, is that in addition to being a person who was unbelievably kind, loving, thoughtful, smart, funny and brave, my dad was also a truly gifted artist. And he used that gift to support his family, working as a professional lettering artist for his entire 36 year career. (The photos in this post show him sitting in front of his drafting table and hard at work, respectively.) He had an incredible way with a pen – his lettering was consistent, beautiful, captivating. And he is the person who taught me how to write when I was still very young. One of my earliest memories is of Dad creating perfect capital letters using spaced out dots and encouraging me to connect them. As I pulled my pencil from one dot to the next, I remember watching with glee as the letters revealed themselves. After that, I would beg him often for more “dot letters” and he would happily oblige. Needless to say, he is the person who inspired me to become a professional calligrapher, and with every letter that I draw, I think of him. He is also the reason I teach others this craft – I want to share the joy that he first shared with me and I want to help others uncover their own gifts and talents, as he did for me.

So, here’s to my sweet father, Michael Thomas Hatty. I love you, Daddy. And I will hold you in my heart forever.

Summer School!

Learn with Meant To Be Calligraphy this Summer!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

We’re excited to share that new dates have just been posted for our popular calligraphy workshops. Our summer Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy classes will be held both in Washington, D.C. (at the airy enclave of The Loft at 600 F in the heart of the District) as well as in Middleburg, Virginia (in the heart of this picturesque town at the brand new – and gorgeous! – Middleburg Events Studio)!

Our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, will again take place at our home/studio, which is located just outside of the Del Ray area of Alexandria, Virginia. Those who have previously participated in one of our Intro workshops are also invited to take part in our signature Calligraphy Study Table sessions. These weeknight gatherings are smaller and less formal than our typical workshops, consisting of a short lecture and demonstration followed by time to practice, play and ask questions. They are held in Michele’s home/studio and coffee and music flow freely.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size intimate, so if you are interested in taking part this summer (or in gifting a class to someone else), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot.
