MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

Hooray! Registration is now open for our early-2018 workshops! In addition to our signature calligraphy workshop, Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, we have also added more sessions of our fun and colorful Introduction to Modern Brush Lettering class!

This winter you’ll find us returning to Washington, DC (teaching at Typecase Industries), Alexandria (teaching at Common Room Studio), Falls Church (teaching at Stylish Patina’s Mosaic District shop), Baltimore (teaching at Becket Hitch) and Charlottesville (teaching at rock, paper, scissors). We can’t wait to be back in these inspiring spaces and are so excited to meet and bring the fun of pointed pen calligraphy and modern brush lettering to even more students!

If you’ve taken part in either of our Intro classes in the past, we hope to see you at one (or more!) of our three upcoming Calligraphy Study Table sessions. And exclusively for our past pointed pen students, be sure to check out our Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy workshop.

As we begin our seventh (!) year sharing our passion with our students, we hope that you will be able to join us for a modern pointed pen calligraphy workshop or a modern brush lettering workshop (or both!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this winter (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect holiday, birthday, anniversary or graduation gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. You can find ALL of the details and register for all of our workshops here.

Hooray! We’ve opened registration for our fall workshops! In addition to our signature calligraphy workshop, Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, we have also added more dates for Introduction to Modern Brush Lettering!

While modern calligraphy is our first love, we are also incredibly smitten with brush lettering and we are so excited about this class! Wondering about the difference between the two types of lettering? In the photo above, you can see the contrast. On the left is an example of our pointed pen calligraphy, on the right, our brush lettering. Pointed pen allows for finer “hairlines” and detail work, whereas brush lettering is typically a little bolder (and, side-note, perfect for bullet journaling!). Both are incredibly useful, fun and relaxing to execute! But don’t take our word for it; here’s some of the feedback we’ve received from our brush lettering students:

  • Such an inspiring class yesterday! I am so excited and have already practiced today. Thank you for introducing me to my new favorite hobby! – MK
  • I had a wonderful time at your class. It was everything I hoped it could be and look forward to making my bullet journal the prettiest one at [my office]. – LD
  • This was the most fun I had in a long time! You are a fantastic teacher, so patient, kind and motivating! Thank you! – JS
This month and next, you can find us returning to teach both pointed pen and brush lettering at some of favorite spots: Washington, D.C. (at Typecase Industries in Shaw), Falls Church (at Stylish Patina’s new Mosaic District shop) and Alexandria (at the brand new Common Room Studio).
We hope that you will be able to join us for a modern pointed pen calligraphy workshop or a modern brush lettering workshop (or both!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this spring (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or graduation gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. You can find ALL of the details and register for all of our workshops here.PS: For those outside of the immediate DC-area, don’t think we’ve forgotten about you! We’ll be returning to Baltimore (at Becket Hitch), Middleburg (at the Middleburg Events Studio) and Charlottesville (at Rock Paper Scissors) in the new year, with registration for those classes opening in mid-November! At that time we’ll also open registration for the next intermediate-level sessions of our Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy workshops and our Calligraphy Study Tables.

New Year, New Workshops!

Hooray! We’ve opened registration for our early-2017 workshops and we are so excited to announce a new class offering: Introduction to Modern Brush Lettering! in addition to our signature calligraphy workshop, Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, we are now unveiling a brand new comprehensive workshop called Introduction to Modern Brush Lettering!

Even better, we will be offering both our calligraphy workshops AND our brush lettering workshops at all of the locations where we teach: Washington, D.C. (at The Lemon Bowl in Park View, The Embassy Row Hotel in Dupont Circle and, for the first time ever, at Typecase Industries in Shaw), Baltimore (at Becket Hitch), Middleburg (at the Middleburg Events Studio), Charlottesville (at Rock Paper Scissors), Falls Church (at Stylish Patina’s Rough Luxe Warehouse) and Alexandria (at the Morrison House).

Past students! We will be offering Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy again this March and we would absolutely love to see you again! And also be sure to take a look at our latest Calligraphy Study Table offerings. This month’s session on tips for envelope addressing was so fun that we’ve decided to offer it again in January, just in time to help you pretty up your valentines! And in February we’ll work on tricky connections between letters.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a modern pointed pen calligraphy workshop or a modern brush lettering workshop (or both!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this winter (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or holiday gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. Back to School!

Hooray! New dates have just been posted for our popular calligraphy workshops. This fall, we’ll begin our sixth year of teaching these classes and we continue to feel so thankful for the chance to share our love for calligraphy with our students and encouraged by the feedback we receive from them. A few of the kind notes we’ve received lately:

  • “Thank you again! I learned so much and have been practicing non stop!!” – EG

  • “Thank you so much for being such a wonderful (and encouraging) instructor! It’s clear by the thought that you put in to each aspect of the class that you are truly committed to your students both success and enjoyment of calligraphy! I thoroughly enjoyed it!” – EW

There is nothing better seeing our students leave our workshops feeling excited to practice and grow as calligraphers!

If you’ve taken our Intro workshop previously: we’ve also posted new dates for our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, as well as for our more free-wheeling Calligraphy Study Tables.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this summer (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or graduation gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. Seven Candles!

Today, Meant To Be Calligraphy turns seven! We never could have imagined when we launched this business on June 1, 2009 that it would flourish so wonderfully. It’s been such a joy and a privilege to work with each one of our awesome clients and to get to know and to have the chance to collaborate with so many incredible industry professionals. We also continue to be grateful for having had the opportunity to meet and teach the art of calligraphy to so many fantastic students along the way. So, to everyone who we’ve met, worked with and taught over these past seven years, thank you, thank you for being part of this journey with us! Here’s to many more years of playing with pens and ink!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

We were absolutely thrilled to see one of our recent collaborations with Charlottesville, Va.-based stationery designers Rock Paper Scissors featured in the Spring 2016 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings’ Real Weddings and Honeymoons magazine! The invitation suite that Rock Paper Scissor’s Dani Antol designed for Kelsey and Casey’s destination wedding in Nassau, Bahamas was truly gorgeous and we were honored to have our Palmer lettering style incorporated into the invitation itself, as well as adorning the invitation envelopes and the seating cards. Seeing our collab in print was the icing on the cake!

We were completely over the moon when Martha Stewart Weddings asked us to contribute the calligraphy to illustrate one of the features in their Winter 2016 issue. The feature, called Tying The Knot, shares several ideas for incorporating knots into your Big Day, and our calligraphy (in our Richardson lettering style) is sprinkled through eight full pages, including on the boutonniere labels, the place cards, the “est. 2016” favor tags and, most prominently, on the oversized, crimson, knot-shaped escort cards. So exciting!

Take a peek at the entire feature below!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

Late last year, I had the privilege of collaborating with our friend Christina at Paperzest to help create the paperie and other signage for a gorgeous styled shoot which is now featured in the Winter 2016 issue of Weddings Unveiled. The shoot, which was photographed by Elizabeth Fogarty Photography, styled by Cheers Darling Events and featured lush florals by Holly Heider Chapple, is an absolute must-see. For the paper and signage, we focused on copper, fig and hunter green, and Christina incorporated my Reese lettering style into all of the various pieces. I even brought to life her vision of having a seating chart lettered on a sheet of real copper! Totally divine!!
