MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

Looking for the perfect one-of-a-kind gift? If so, we totally have you covered! For a limited time (literally, right now until Friday December 4, 2015 at 10 am ET), we are accepting orders for our custom, hand-lettered, personalized Christmas ornaments. If you would like to have something truly special to give to:

• your spouse
• your parents
• your in-laws
• your newlywed friends
• your nearlywed friends
• your friends who just became parents
• your amazing long-married grandparents
• your friends and family who already have (almost) everything
• your friends who live in a tiny apartment and appreciate small-in-size gifts
• pretty much anyone who you really, really like

… then you’ll want to pop over to our shop and snap up an ornament (or two! or several!). We’ll write out your message (typically the name of a family and the year the couple was married, as shown in the photo above, but we are glad to consider other sentiments as well, if space allows!) in red, green, gold or white ink and we will ship it out to you to arrive in advance of Christmas. But again, this is an extremely limited time sale; once it’s over, we will not accept any additional orders this year!

This is our second year offering these ornaments. When we debuted them last year, we were thrilled that they met such a happy response. Some of the feedback we received from purchasers:

• The ornament is absolutely gorgeous! Michele is a pleasure to work with. – PS
• Great Christmas present for my wife for our first Christmas as a married couple. The gold lettering really stood out on the live tree with white lights. – JD
• Thank you for the lightning fast delivery. It is such a sweet heirloom for our family. – HM

Want to learn more? You can get all of the details as well as place your order here!

PS: A spot in one of our Calligraphy Workshops also makes a fab gift! Registration for our early-2016 classes opened recently but there are still plenty of dates to choose from! Details can be found here!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

New dates have just been posted for our calligraphy workshops! In early-2016, we’ll again be teaching in Washington, D.C. at The Loft at 600 F in the heart of the District as well as in Middleburg, Virginia at Middleburg Events Studio, in Charlottesville, Virginia at rock paper scissors and also just outside of Baltimore, Maryland at Becket Hitch. Plus, this winter we’re offering two workshops at Stylish Patina’s Rough Luxe Warehouse in Falls Church, Virginia!

This month marked the beginning of our fifth year of teaching these classes. It is such a joy to be able to share our love for calligraphy with our students and we continue to be grateful for and encouraged by the feedback we receive from them. A very small sampling:

  • “I just wanted to thank you so much for the wonderful class on Saturday! I had such a great time and can’t wait to get practicing! I definitely hope to do a follow-up class soon!” – KM
  • “I had a great time! I know I’ll enjoy practicing and using my new skills.” – BD
  • “I just wanted to thank you again for teaching such a wonderful class. I couldn’t believe how quickly the time passed! I was talking to [a friend and fellow student] and we both definitely want to sign up for the follow up class. Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge!” – TT
  • ” THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I LOVED the class! I feel very happy with the knowledge and tools I walked away with and will be practicing diligently!  ” – CH
  • “Thanks Michele! I so enjoyed the workshop, and look forward to practicing more at home.” – ST

There is nothing better seeing our students leave our workshops feeling excited to practice and grow as calligraphers!

For our past students, we’ve also posted new dates for our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, as well as for our signature, weeknight Calligraphy Study Table sessions. It’s always exciting to see how

As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this winter (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or holiday gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. Featured on Good Morning Washington!

Our calligraphy made its television debut today! The lovely Yodit Gebreyes of Favored by Yodit appeared on News Channel 8’s Good Morning Washington to share tips on dressing your table for Thanksgiving and we were lucky enough to collaborate with her on a bunch of pretty and creative ways to make this year’s celebration even more personalized and special than usual as you gather with friends and family.

Among the ideas Yodit included in her tablescape, all of which featured our Glade lettering style:

• Cards at each place setting that say “I am thankful for:” to encourage everyone to reflect on their blessings

• A large pumpkin centerpiece featuring hand-lettered sentiments of thankfulness plus hand-lettered mini pumpkins to adorn each place setting

• Buffet cards that help identify dishes for guests

• Wine glasses from West Elm, personalized with custom phrases written on each

• Personalized gift tags to go along with party favors

You can see all of Yodit’s ideas (and our calligraphy!!) by pressing “play” on the video above or pop over to Good Morning Washington’s website. Hooray!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

I cannot believe it is already November! Before this fall completely gets away from me, I wanted to share how absolutely thrilled I am to have three of my clients’ weddings featured in the Summer/Fall 2015 issue of Washingtonian Bride & Groom.

I had the privilege of working with Janice Carnevale from Bellwether Events and Claudia Smith from Fig. 2 Design on paper details for Alice and John’s May 2014 wedding at Rockwood Manor in Potomac, Maryland, as well as collaborating with Tabitha Roberts from Roberts & Co. Events to create custom hand-lettered wood tag escort cards for Jordan and Folasope’s September 2014 wedding at Potomac View Terrace in Washington, D.C. and collaborating with Rachel Merkle from Miss Merkle Design on everything from the custom invitations to a myriad of Day Of loveliness for Lee and Jonathan’s September 2014 wedding at Meridian House in Washington, D.C. I cannot overstate what an honor it is every time a client entrusts me with the paper (and chalkboard and mirror and window and wood and… I’ve written on just about everything at this point!) details for their celebrations. I take my work extremely seriously and try to give my very best with every project.

I am also ever thankful for the opportunities I have to work with so many amazing creative partners, both event designers and paper pros. To have some of those collaborations featured by Washingtonian Bride & Groom is the icing on the (wedding) cake! And to that end, I also want to say thank you to my fellow DC event professionals for making Meant To Be Calligraphy a “Top Vote Getter” in the magazine’s 2015 list of top wedding professionals. This is our second year receiving that designation and we could not be more honored to have that literal and figurative vote of confidence from our colleagues! Thank you!!

New dates have just been posted for our fall calligraphy workshops! Over the past few years, in addition to many fabulous locals, we’ve had students travel from as far away as Alaska and even Australia to take part in our workshops (in fact, Katie, in the photo above, flew down from Boston this summer for the class. We were honored!). November’s workshops will mark the beginning of our fifth year of teaching these classes and we remain humbled and thrilled by the feedback we receive from our students. A very small sampling:

  • “Thank you Michele! The class was interesting, educational and a lot of fun. You are great at teaching and sharing what you do. I look forward to signing up for continuing classes.” – MC
  • “Thank you for a great class yesterday! My sister and I had a great time and are excited to keep practicing.” – NG
  • “The workshop was incredible! All I want to do is calligraph everything!” – ST
  • “I wanted to thank you for a WONDERFUL workshop. I truly learned so much from you.” – CS
  • “Thank you so much for organizing and leading a great workshop – the 3.5 hours flew by! Learning the techniques and practicing under your guidance was so helpful and definitely provided the kick in the butt I needed to keep practicing. I’m sure I’ll be asking you questions in the future!” – JS

From our perspective, there is nothing better seeing our students leave our workshops feeling excited and encouraged to practice and grow as calligraphers!

And as you may know, our workshop offerings extend beyond just our Intro workshops. Past students can can also find new dates in both September and December for our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, which takes place at our home/studio, located just outside of the Del Ray area of Alexandria, Virginia. Those who have previously participated in one of our Intro workshops are also invited to take part in our signature, weeknight Calligraphy Study Table sessions; September’s session is sold out, but in October we’ll focus on tricky connections between letters.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size super small to allow for plenty of individual attention and instruction, so if you are interested in taking part this fall (or in gifting a class to someone else – a spot in our workshops is the perfect birthday, anniversary or holiday gift!), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. The Real Thing For “The Real Thing”

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

I recently had the privilege of creating a bit of hand lettering (i.e. the real thing, not typography!) to be used as the title treatment for the cover of author Ellen McCarthy’s just-out, fabulous book, “The Real Thing.” Published by Random House, the book reflects on Ellen’s time on the Weddings beat for The Washington Post and offers lots of hard-won wisdom on finding love and helping it grow. It’s a must read for anyone who is either looking for love or wanting love to last. Working with Ellen and designer Victoria Allen at Random House to come up with just the right look for the title treatment was quite a thrill and I could not be more honored to have played a small part in Ellen’s huge achievement! The book was released last week – be sure to check it out!

We are so excited to share that our work is featured in the fall 2014 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings! We collaborated with Rock Paper Scissors in Charlottesville, Va. to create the most luscious invitation suite for our clients, Joanna and Kyle. It features our Carter lettering style rendered both in letterpress as well as in gold foil. The wedding, which was planned and styled by Simply Chic Events, was photographed by Jose Villa and is a must-see!
