My Hero

Daddy at his desk

Last week, my family and I said goodbye to my father. He had lived a long and wonderful life and he passed away peacefully, for which I will be ever thankful. But losing him was still very unexpected and I’m quite sure that my heart will never be the same. My dad was, without question, my hero.

The reason I wanted to take a moment to remember him here in this space, however, is that in addition to being a person who was unbelievably kind, loving, thoughtful, smart, funny and brave, my dad was also a truly gifted artist. And he used that gift to support his family, working as a professional lettering artist for his entire 36 year career. (The photos in this post show him sitting in front of his drafting table and hard at work, respectively.) He had an incredible way with a pen – his lettering was consistent, beautiful, captivating. And he is the person who taught me how to write when I was still very young. One of my earliest memories is of Dad creating perfect capital letters using spaced out dots and encouraging me to connect them. As I pulled my pencil from one dot to the next, I remember watching with glee as the letters revealed themselves. After that, I would beg him often for more “dot letters” and he would happily oblige. Needless to say, he is the person who inspired me to become a professional calligrapher, and with every letter that I draw, I think of him. He is also the reason I teach others this craft – I want to share the joy that he first shared with me and I want to help others uncover their own gifts and talents, as he did for me.

So, here’s to my sweet father, Michael Thomas Hatty. I love you, Daddy. And I will hold you in my heart forever.

Summer School!

Learn with Meant To Be Calligraphy this Summer!

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

We’re excited to share that new dates have just been posted for our popular calligraphy workshops. Our summer Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy classes will be held both in Washington, D.C. (at the airy enclave of The Loft at 600 F in the heart of the District) as well as in Middleburg, Virginia (in the heart of this picturesque town at the brand new – and gorgeous! – Middleburg Events Studio)!

Our formal follow-up workshop, Continuing with Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy, will again take place at our home/studio, which is located just outside of the Del Ray area of Alexandria, Virginia. Those who have previously participated in one of our Intro workshops are also invited to take part in our signature Calligraphy Study Table sessions. These weeknight gatherings are smaller and less formal than our typical workshops, consisting of a short lecture and demonstration followed by time to practice, play and ask questions. They are held in Michele’s home/studio and coffee and music flow freely.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size intimate, so if you are interested in taking part this summer (or in gifting a class to someone else), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. You can find more details and register here.

MEANT TO BE CALLIGRAPHY

We’re so pleased to share that registration is now open for Meant To Be Calligraphy’s popular calligraphy workshops. Our spring Introduction to Contemporary Pointed Pen Calligraphy classes will be held both in Washington, D.C. (this season, at the airy enclave of The Loft at 600 F in the heart of the District) as well as in Chicago (at the paper shop dreamland that is Greer Chicago)! For the latter workshops, we are partnering with the amazing Chandra Greer to bring our workshop experience to her beautiful space in April to celebrate Greer’s “Month of Letters” and we could not be more excited!

Some have a theme (at April’s Study Table we’ll work on spring-themed greeting card designs such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, etc.) and others are more technique-driven (next week’s session will focus on creative capital letters, March will be all about lowercase letter variations, and May will focus on exploring new nibs and troubleshooting issues of scratchiness or poor ink flow). And in all cases, they are fun! They are held in Michele’s home/studio and coffee and music flow freely.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a workshop (or two!). As always, we’ll be keeping the class size intimate, so if you are interested in taking part this spring (or in gifting a class to someone else), please don’t wait too long to secure your spot. Four Candles

Four years ago today, we officially launched Meant To Be Calligraphy.

As Jennifer and I reflect back over the past year, we are so grateful both to our amazing clients and to the other creative professionals – event planners and stylists, stationers, photographers, caterers and florists – with whom we have had the pleasure to work. With that in mind, we wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged us over the past year by entrusting their calligraphy needs to us; we considered it an honor to work with each of you!

Here’s to four happy years filled with beautiful lettering, with hopefully many more to come!

Meant To Be Calligraphy's Custom Calligraphy Return Address Stamp

Meant To Be Calligraphy

This week, The Stationery Place very kindly included our Custom Calligraphy Return Address Stamps in its 2012 Holiday Gift Guide for Stationery Lovers. As blogger Lyndsey noted: “if you love pretty paper, you probably love office supplies too.” Um, yes! Her guide includes several fantastic ideas for the packaging geeks among us. Personally, the kraft labels she spotlighted from Martha Stewart’s new line at Staples are calling my name. Pop over to see all of Lyndsey’s fab picks!

An Inviting Invitation

Rich Little Bird Invitation

Rich Little Bird

We recently had the opportunity to work with Shelli Martinez of Rich Little Bird for the first time when she asked us to address wedding invitation envelopes in our Flint lettering style for a couple who will tie the knot in December. She shared a couple of glimpses of the invitation suite over on the Rich Little Bird web site and we were wowed – what a pretty, wintery confection!
